Ergonomics
Do you feel fatigued by the end of the day after working at your desk?
Have people at home or work told you that you are slumping?
Does your desk and chair 'fit' you?
What is an ergonomic assessment?
An ergonomic assessment is an evaluation performed by a licensed physical therapist to determine if a work site is appropriately set up for an individual to be able to work at their most optimum level. The evaluation includes observation of the individual at their desk performing daily tasks, followed by specific measurements being taken with and without the person seated at their workstation. This information is then analyzed and the therapist will make specific recommendations on the most appropriate set-up of the chair, desk, monitor, keyboard and layout of the desk. Information is also provided to the client about what they can be doing throughout the day to maintain appropriate positioning and prevent injury.
Who can benefit from an ergonomic assessment?
This evaluation is appropriate for anyone interested in preventing injuries, who may be starting to experience problems, who has been treated for dysfunctions related to their job, or who is just looking to improve how they feel through the work day. Symptoms to be aware of are: aching in the neck or back during or by the end of the day, pain or soreness in the shoulders, elbows or wrists, or radicular symptoms (tingling, numbness) into the forearms or wrists.
What information are you given from the assessment?
-
How to adjust your chair and sit in it correctly
- Where your monitor should be placed for optimal viewing
- Proper level for your keyboard and wrist and hand position
- Appropriate placement for telephone and if headset may be necessary
- Positioning for documents if you do a lot of data entry
- What to do during the day to stay flexible and not get stiff
